Holi, Diwali and Easter could soon become official holidays in Pakistan after the adoption of a resolution on the issue by the lower house of parliament.
The resolution was moved in the National Assembly by Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, a lawmaker from the ruling PML-N party and a senior leader of the Pakistan Hindu Council.
The resolution, which sought steps to declare the festivals of minority communities as “closed holidays”, was passed reluctantly, according to media reports.
Festivals such as Holi and Diwali were official holidays in Pakistan after the country’s independence but they were subsequently made optional. Large-scale public celebrations of the festivals became rare after military ruler Zia-ul-Haq adopted his policy of “Islamisation”.
The resolution moved by Vankwani on Tuesday said: “This house is of the opinion that government should take steps to declare Holi, Diwali and Easter as closed holidays for minorities.”
