Feeling Sad, Listen to Adele

The team, led by Dr Annemieke Van den Tol of De Montfort University in Leicester, looked at the listening habits of around 450 people going through a range of emotional circumstances. They found people who listened to sad music, by artists such as Adele (pictured), were better able to come to terms with loss

Music can be a powerful tool, helping to get you pumped up for a workout or lift you out of a funk after a tough day.

But new research has shown that it can even help people deal with the loss of a loved one.

The study found that listening to sad songs can actually help people work through their grief more effectively than happy music.

By listening to music of artists such as Adele, Radiohead and Muse, people were able to come to terms with the loss of a loved one better than more upbeat music.

In two separate studies, researchers found that the sad emotions stirred up by downbeat music may ultimately lead to feelings of consolation.

The team, led by Dr Annemieke Van den Tol of De Montfort University in Leicester, looked at the listening habits of around 450 people going through a range of emotional circumstances.

Researchers found that people reached for their sadder songs during times of crisis, which helped them to move on sooner.

‘Sadness often involves emotional loss, which is not a problem which can be solved or reversed,’ explained Dr Van den Tol.

‘The only real way to move on and feel better is by accepting the situation, and we found that people were able to do this by listening to sad music, but not so much by listening to happy music.’
