The Lords who voted to continue detaining pregnant women in UK immigration centres

The House of Lords has voted to prevent pregnant women from being detained in immigration centres in the UK.

However, of the 489 Lords who voted on Tuesday, 215 voted against an amendment to the Immigration Bill to stop expectant mothers from being detained.

The bill will now pass to the House of Commons, where it will need to be approved by MPs before it becomes law.

Inspectors who visited Yarl’s Wood centre in found 99 pregnant women had been detained there in 2014. Official Home Office policy states pregnant women should only be held in exceptional circumstances.
