India heads towards ‘one nation, one market’ as PM Modi launches e-platform for farmers

PM Modi on Thursday launched e-National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), connecting 21 wholesale markets (mandis) from eight states, calling the portal’s introduction a “turning point” in the country’s agriculture sector that would eventually allow farmers to decide “when, where and at what price” they sell their produce.

Elaborating on the reasons for linking the launch to the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ambedkar, the PM said the e-platform would be an enabling tool for farmers and was in tune with the Dalit icon’s larger vision of empowerment of all.

Referring to the features of the portal that instantly integrated all 21 mandis in eight states, he said that though this scheme would naturally prove advantageous to farmers, it would also benefit other stakeholders including consumers and traders.
